Some of the best, most lauded bakeries in all New South Wales can be found outside of Sydney. While they may exude rustic, country charm, when it comes to quality they all have it in spades. Whether we’re talking Bowral, Blackheath or Berry, each region has a selection of premium, must-try bakeries that serve up some of the most mouth-watering treats you’re likely to ever eat.
The Southern Highlands
Gumnut Patisserie - Bowral
You’ve probably heard of The Gumnut Patisserie, so is it worth the hype? Absolutely. This legendary bakery serves some of the best pastries you’ll likely ever taste - and their pies are a MUST!
Fermento Bakery - Bowral
From the good people who brought you Baked in Berrima, Fermento has just hit Bong Bong street and is already making a splash. You can also sit down for lunch or breakfast here, and we highly suggest you do so.
Baked in Berrima - Berrima
Speaking of Fermento, it’s older sister Baked in Berrima - located in the iconic Mrs Oldbucks Pantry (also worth a visit) - is hands down one of the best bakeries in the Southern Highlands. Whether your with your partner, your family, or a big group of friends, head into Mrs Old Bucks to pick up your selection of condiments, then head down to the bakery for a selection of sweet and savoury treats.

The Blue Mountains
Hominy Bakery - Katoomba
Made famous for their sourdough, Hominy Bakery has also mastered the art of the flakey pastry serving arguably the best croissant in the Blue Mountains.
Black Cockatoo - Katoomba & Lawson
This list wouldn’t be complete without the legendary Black Cockatoo. Everything at Black Cockatoo Bakery is baked fresh, by hand on the same day - you will only ever be served the best. This is a must-visit for anyone coming to the Blue Mountains regardless of their love of pastry or not.
The South Coast
Flour Water Salt - Kiama & Milton
Flour Water Salt bakery is a family owned business - hence the endearing charm - and operates bakery cafes in the seaside towns of Milton and Kiama. Their flagship cafe, which serves up tasty breakfast and lunch options, is in South Nowra and a must-visit.
Slow Dough - Kiama
Slow Dough started as an ambitious concept first conceived in a garage, only to become one of the best bakeries on the South Coast. This sourdough bakery also serves sweet treats and The Little Marionette coffee.
Milkwood Bakery - Berry
Milkwood Bakery is located in the heart of Berry, and offers a full range of Organic Sourdough breads, a mouthwatering and ever-changing array of cakes and pastries (sweet and savoury) as well as takeaway coffees, tea, and hot chocolates.
Lagom Bakery - Burrill Lake (near Mollymook)
This bakery came to be during the height of the 2020 lockdowns, where the owners took their opportunity in isolation to pursue the art of artisanal bread-making in earnest. What started as a hole-in-the-wall is now the multi-award winning Lagom Bakery, and is not to be missed.
Hayden’s Pies - Ulladulla
Could Hayden’s Pies be the best pies on the South Coast… we’d bet good money they are. This pie shop may look humble from the outside, but the pies are the stuff of legend. Puff pastry made from Pepe Saya butter, flour from Nowra, meat supplied from the meat market in South Ulladulla and St George’s Basin, this bakery is one of a kind.
Beurre Noisette Patisserie - Milton
Who would’ve guessed a french patisserie could be found in the seaside village of Milton? Beurre Noisette Patisserie is the child of french-born Alex and local girl Tess, who decided to pursue their passion in 2024 - and we are so glad they did!
