The best restaurant in Blackheath

Ates restaurant is a multi-award winning, hatted restaurant in Blackheath, right in the heart of the Blue Mountains. The etymology of Ateş is from Ottoman Turkish and means “fire” - and we could not think of a more accurate moniker for this restaurant and wine bar that cook their food straight from a 150 year old ironbark-fuelled oven.

With that sort of history, you know the dishes are going to be good.

Why we love it

The Local Compass is passionate about uplifting all businesses in regional New South Wales (and indeed, Australia) that are crucial in the elevation of our food scene, and Ates is no different. Proudly championing local producers such as Malfoy’s wild honey, as well sourcing their sustainable and freshly farmed ingredients from Farm It Forward and Epicurean Harvest, this slice of Turkey in the alpine heroes all things The Blue Mountains: which makes the food extra delicious.

But it doesn’t stop at the eats, Ates also serves locally brewed craft beers from Mountains Culture Beer Co and wine from Frankly this wine was made by Bob and more traditional styles in Darragh wines from The Megalong Valley.

Their menu changes often and is heavily dependent on what is in season, which means whatever you’re to be served you can be sure it’s the very best.

The details

Ates is a restaurant with a keen focus on good wine and wood-fired shared plates served hot. The warm and welcoming ambience is what you come to expect from places with their roots deep in the Mediterranean, and is the sort of intimate dining space that will make you feel right at home, except this food cannot be replicated in any old kitchen.

Ates serves lunch on Saturday only, and is open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday from 5.30pm till late. Oh, and if you have a fancy bottle of plonk at home and looking to dust it off for that perfect occasion, Ates does BYO Wednesday at $10 a bottle.

As with all top-notch restaurants, bookings are strongly encouraged if not essential.
