Our Perfect Weekend in Orange NSW: A 3-Day Food, Wine & Country Escape

There are weekends away, and then there are weekends in Orange.

Just a few hours west of Sydney, this charming town in NSW's Central West has fast become one of the most exciting food and wine destinations in the state. Think cool-climate wineries, seriously good restaurants, beautiful country scenery, independent boutiques and the kind of long lunches that stretch well into the afternoon (and sometimes, evening).

But the best part? Orange embodies that slow-paced country life. Spend your morning browsing beautiful little shops, your afternoon drinking chardonnay overlooking a vineyard and your evening tucked into an intimate wine bar.

If you're planning a weekend in Orange NSW, we've put together our idea of the perfect escape. This 3-day Orange NSW itinerary takes you from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunchtime, with our favourite cafés, wineries, restaurants, boutiques and hidden gems along the way.

Whether you're planning a romantic weekend in Orange NSW, a girls' getaway or a food-focused escape from Sydney, here's exactly how we'd spend it.

Friday: Arrive, Unwind & Eat Well

4:00pm — Check Into Your Orange Accommodation

First things first: drop your bags and settle in.

Orange has some beautiful boutique hotels, country cottages and vineyard accommodation which we’ve broken down for you here, but for a first visit, we'd recommend staying relatively close to town at boutique hotel Yallungah Boutique Hotel.

Why? Because some of the best restaurants in Orange NSW, along with its wine bars, cafés and boutiques, are concentrated around the town centre. Alternatively, if you're after a romantic country escape, Basalt Luxury Accommodation offers a more secluded stay among the surrounding countryside.

5:30pm — Start With a Glass of Wine at Ferment

There's no better way to start an Orange weekend getaway than with a glass of local wine.

Tucked into a heritage building on Hill Street, Ferment is one of the best places to get acquainted with the Orange wine region without leaving town. The wine centre showcases a wide range of local producers, including smaller wineries you might not otherwise come across, so settle in for a glass of something delicious, ask for a recommendation and ease yourself into country-weekend mode.

Best for: An introduction to Orange wines

7:00pm — Dinner at The Union Bank

Presuming you want something a little more relaxed to kick off the weekend, for your first evening in Orange we'd book a table at The Union Bank. The Schoolhouse Restaurant is a lovely choice for a proper sit-down dinner as the food is (predictably) excellent, however has a far more relaxed vibe.

The Local Compass tip: Book ahead, particularly for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Alternative: For a more intimate Italian dinner and something a little more special, try Lucetta Dining.

Saturday: The Perfect Day in Orange NSW

If Friday was about settling in, Saturday is where the magic happens.

Today is all about the things Orange does best: good coffee, beautiful boutiques, cool-climate wine and a long lunch overlooking the countryside.

8:30am — Breakfast at Byng Street Local Store

Start your Saturday with breakfast at one of Orange's best-loved neighbourhood cafés. Byng Street Local Store is a longstanding favourite, known for its neighbourhood atmosphere, excellent coffee and all-day breakfast menu.

The Local Compass tip: Byng Street doesn't take bookings, so arrive early if you want to beat the weekend rush.

Alternative: If your weekend begins on a weekday, Good Eddy is another excellent specialty coffee stop on Lords Place, however they are close on weekends!.

10:00am — Browse Orange's Beautiful Independent Boutiques

One of the most underrated things to do in Orange NSW is shop.

Orange has a genuinely lovely independent shopping scene, with beautifully curated fashion boutiques, homewares stores and florists dotted throughout the town centre.

If you’re having brekky at Byng Street then your natural first stop would be the legendary Dirty Janes. However another great place to start exploring is Jumbled on Sale Street. From there, wander towards Summer Street and the surrounding streets, stopping wherever catches your eye.

11:30am — Head Into Orange Wine Country

No weekend in Orange NSW would be complete without exploring the wineries.

Orange is renowned for its cool-climate wines, particularly chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and sparkling wine, with vineyards scattered across the picturesque countryside surrounding town.

For this itinerary, we're taking you to the heavy hitters and heading towards Nashdale, where you'll find some of the best wineries in Orange NSW.

A few favourites worth considering booking a tasting are:

  • Rowlee Wines — For a beautifully presented estate, guided tastings and the option to stay for lunch.

  • Philip Shaw Wines — For a sophisticated cellar door housed in a restored historic stone barn.

  • Nashdale Lane Wines — For a relaxed, boutique wine experience in a lovely rural setting.

The Local Compass tip: If you're planning a long lunch at Rowlee, book your wine tasting for beforehand. It means less driving, more time enjoying the countryside and a much more relaxed afternoon.

Remember to organise winery transport!

1:00pm — Settle In for a Long Lunch at Rowlee

If there's one experience we'd say is an absolute must for your Orange weekend, it's a long lunch at a winery.

And Rowlee Dining & Bar is a beautiful place to do exactly that.

Set among the vineyards in Nashdale, Rowlee brings together seasonal regional produce, estate wines and a contemporary dining space overlooking the surrounding gardens and countryside.

The Local Compass tip: Book the restaurant rather than relying on a casual walk-in. If you'd prefer something more laid-back, Rowlee's Garden Bar offers outdoor dining and wood-fired pizzas on weekends.

Other long lunches worth considering:

4:00pm — Return to Your Accommodation and Unwind

After a morning of exploring and a leisurely winery lunch, head back to your accommodation for a little downtime. Read a book, have a nap, sit outside with a glass of wine or simply enjoy not having anywhere to be. One of the best things about an Orange NSW weekend getaway is the opportunity to slow down, so we'd resist the temptation to squeeze another three cellar doors into the afternoon.

7:00pm — Dinner and Wine at Hey Rosey or Fiorini's Osteria Italiana (depending on your mood)

For Saturday evening, we'd keep things intimate at either Hey Rosey or Fiorini's Osteria Italiana, depending on your mood.

Hey Rosey is one of Orange's most exciting little wine bars, with a tiny dining room, an interesting wine list and a food menu designed around sharing. Expect a cosy atmosphere, thoughtful small plates and a mix of local and international wines.

If you’re looking for a more fine dining and elevated experience but no less snug, head to Fiorini's Osteria Italiana for one of the absolute highlights of the Orange's food scene.

Best for: Date night or something special

The Local Compass tip: Book ahead! Both venues are some of the town's more sought-after dinner spots.

Alternative: Lucetta Dining for an intimate Italian dinner, or Summer St Wine Room for a relaxed evening of wine and food.

Sunday: Pastries, Parks & One Last Taste of Orange

Sunday mornings in Orange are made for taking things slow. You've already enjoyed the wineries, restaurants and boutique shopping, so let today be about one final coffee, a little fresh air and perhaps a detour before heading home.

9:00am — Coffee and Pastries at Racine Bakery

No Orange weekend itinerary would be complete without a bakery stop.

Racine Bakery has earned a loyal following for its sourdough, buttery pastries, pies and baked treats, and it's the perfect place to start your final morning.

Pick up a coffee and something delicious to eat.

The Local Compass tip: Grab a few extra treats for the road. You won't regret it!

10:00am — Take a Stroll Through Cook Park

Just a short distance from Orange's town centre, Cook Park is one of the prettiest places to spend a quiet morning.

It's especially spectacular in autumn, when the leaves turn shades of red, gold and orange, but it's a lovely place to visit throughout the year. Grab your takeaway coffee and croissant, wander through the gardens and enjoy one last slow morning before the drive home.

The Local Compass tip: If you're visiting Orange in autumn, this is one stop we wouldn't skip.

11:00am — Take a Scenic Detour

Before leaving Orange, we'd make time for one last local discovery. If you have a little more time up your sleeve, consider a detour to Millthorpe.

Around half an hour from Orange, this charming heritage village is filled with historic buildings, independent shops, galleries and beautiful country streets.

It's a lovely way to round out your weekend before heading home.

Best for: Local produce, country charm and a final wander

12:30pm — One Last Lunch Before Heading Home

If you're spending longer in Millthorpe, consider making lunch part of your visit. We’d recommend either the
Millthorpe Hotel for a tried and true pub lunch of if you’re looking for something fancy to round out your special weekend, then the Tonic Restaurant should not be missed.

Otherwise, we'd happily head home with a bag of Racine pastries and memories of a very well-spent time away.

Make Your Orange Weekend Your Own

One of the best things about Orange is that there's no single right way to experience it.

Whether you're travelling as a couple, with friends or on a tighter budget, it's easy to adapt this Orange NSW itinerary to suit your style.

For a Romantic Weekend in Orange NSW

If you're planning a romantic escape, we'd lean into the region's beautiful accommodation and special-occasion dining.

Book a vineyard stay, upgrade Saturday's long lunch to a degustation at Printhie Dining and leave plenty of time to enjoy the countryside.

For a truly slow weekend, skip the extra Sunday activities and spend the morning enjoying your accommodation before heading home.

For a Girls' Weekend in Orange

Orange is an excellent girls' weekend destination, particularly if your ideal getaway involves wine, shopping and long lunches.

Spend Saturday morning exploring the boutiques around Sale Street and Summer Street, book a winery lunch with your friends and finish the evening with cocktails or wine in town.

For larger groups, we'd recommend booking a country cottage or self-contained accommodation with plenty of space to relax together.

The Local Compass tip: Organise a winery driver or guided tour so everyone can enjoy the tastings.

For Wine Lovers

If wine is the main event, swap Saturday morning's shopping for an additional cellar door.

Some of the best wineries in Orange NSW are located around Nashdale, Canobolas and the surrounding countryside, making it relatively easy to build a day around one area.

We'd still recommend keeping the number of stops manageable. Two or three excellent tastings are far more enjoyable than racing through six.

For a More Affordable Orange Weekend

You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy Orange.

Choose comfortable accommodation in town, focus on casual cafés and restaurants, enjoy free attractions such as Cook Park and save your budget for one memorable winery experience.

You can also enjoy the town's boutiques, gardens and surrounding scenery without spending much at all.

Our advice? Choose one experience to splurge on and keep the rest relaxed.

Where to Stay in Orange NSW

Wondering where to stay in Orange NSW for a weekend? The best location depends on the kind of trip you're planning.

Stay in Orange Town

Best for: First-time visitors, foodies and weekend getaways

If you're planning to spend your evenings visiting restaurants and wine bars, we'd recommend staying in or near the town centre. You'll be closer to the cafés, shops and dining experiences that make Orange so appealing, and you'll have less need to drive after dinner.

Our pick: Yallungah Boutique Hotel for heritage charm and boutique style, however two other great options are de Russie Boutique Hotel Orange and The Oriana Orange - Retro Hotel & Resort.

Stay at a Winery

Best for: Couples and romantic weekends

For something more secluded, consider accommodation among the vineyards. Expect beautiful views, peaceful mornings and the feeling of being properly away from it all.

Our picks: Basalt Luxury Accommodation or Borrodell Estate Cottages are our top picks, however most vineyards have options to stay on-site.

Stay in a Country Cottage

Best for: Groups, families and longer stays

If you're travelling with friends or children, a country cottage or self-contained home can be a great option. You'll have room to spread out, somewhere to enjoy local produce and the flexibility to cook a meal or two.

Our picks: Byng Cottage is excellent for a group getaway, however there are options in abundance on Air BnB.

The Local Compass tip: Check the distance from Orange town before booking. Some beautiful rural properties are a considerable drive from restaurants and shops.

Planning Your Weekend in Orange NSW

How to Get to Orange NSW From Sydney

Planning an Orange NSW weekend getaway from Sydney?

Orange is approximately 250 kilometres west of Sydney, with the drive typically taking around 3.5–4 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The journey takes you through the Blue Mountains and into the Central West, making it a lovely road trip in its own right.

Do You Need a Car in Orange?

For a weekend focused entirely on the town centre, you can explore many cafés, restaurants and shops on foot. However, if you want to visit the wineries, scenic lookouts and surrounding villages, we'd recommend having access to a car.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Orange NSW?

Orange is a genuinely lovely year-round destination, but each season offers something a little different.

Autumn: Our favourite time for a first visit. Expect colourful foliage, beautiful country scenery and cosy restaurants.

Winter: Perfect for fireside dining, hearty food, red wine and a romantic country escape.

Spring: A lovely time for gardens, winery visits, fresh produce and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Summer: Ideal for outdoor dining, long lunches, cellar door visits and warm evenings.

Our pick: Autumn for the quintessential Orange experience, although food and wine lovers will find plenty to enjoy in every season.

What Should You Book Ahead?

We'd recommend booking your accommodation, Saturday winery lunch and Saturday evening dinner well in advance, particularly during long weekends, festivals and peak autumn weekends.

Cellar door tastings may also require bookings, especially for groups but cafés can generally be left more flexible.
